So, I’ve had some luck lately, both good and bad. Going in reverse alphabetical order,
Good:
Casey and I had been banging our heads against the wall for almost three weeks trying to figure out why you couldn’t purchase and download the PDF e-books of my short stories from my website. We downloaded different modules and used third-party carts that were supposed to integrate with Google Checkout and nothing. Nada. Zilch. Turns out that it was all caused by a typo in the admin portion of my site. After yet another long day of driving ourselves crazy I just happened to stumble across the typo, fixed it and now everything works like a dream. One of those good dreams where you wake up with a smile and hear the birds singing, not like the ones where you accidentally show up to your grandmother’s 60th birthday party naked.
I started a novel for National Novel Writing Month almost three years ago and just stalled out. I have thrown myself back at it full bore. I read the 25,000 or so words that I had and started writing more. I’m pretty excited about it.
Bad:
I had an awesome idea the other day. Well, I thought it was awesome, anyway. I was going through the App Store on my iPhone and came across a small poetry app someone had created, so I thought it would be very cool to turn Nomad into an iPhone/iTouch app for people to download. I had visions of animated page turns and everything. The first problem with that is that I don’t own a Mac and you can only develop for iPhones on a Mac.
I called my good friend, Fred, who agreed to let me monopolize his computer for a while and I thought that it would be smooth sailing from there. “Thought” being the operative word in that sentence.
As I was getting ready to head over to his house I cracked my head on the corner of a duct in my basement and got a pretty decent cut. http://yfrog.com/62eecj
But, eventually, I got to his house and started downloading the Software Development Kit (SDK), but his connection was really slow for some reason and it took two hours to download the 1.75 gig file. I hadn’t seen Fred in a while, so we had fun hanging out and catching up during that two hours, so that was good, but the whole time I was sitting there with blood congealing and drying in my hair. The biggest problem came when I tried to install it only to find that Fred was running Mac OS 10.3 and the SDK required 10.5 or greater. Apple was kind enough to post a link where you could upgrade for the low, low price of $129, but we opted not to bother with that.
If there is anyone local who has a Mac running OS 10.5 or greater and wouldn’t mind letting me impose on them for a while I’m still interested in giving that a shot, though.
